Use 2SC945 and NOT 2N945's

I just noticed that up until now the build guide text said 'Roland/Boss used 2N945's in virtually everything they produced during this era, so this is what we've specified here', when it should read 2SC945 and not 2N945. It says 2SC945 in the actual parts list, so hopefully nobody has gone and bought 2N945's as they are PNP and won't work. Apologies for that mix up. I've just updated the build guide.

Hoping the ones I used are ok they are the ones I used for x0xb0x but mark c945

C945's are the same as 2SC945's. They just cut off the 2S to save space for the label on the body.

As long as they aren't N945 then you're alright

Hi!  my first post here, starting my build on the CB55 finally!  Would 2N3904's work for this?

possibly, but i think the pinouts are different, so you'd have a nightmare time bending the legs of every 3904 to fit properly.

Ahh, thanks for that info, I had a ton of those 3904's but it's not worth the bother.  Looking on mouser, I am wondering if  the Fairchild KSC1815YTA would be a close fit as far as pinouts and voltage specs to the 2SC945?

if i recall correctly, Roland used 1815's in a lot of TB303's as a drop in replacement for the 945's, so i guess they should work fine.

If you're buying from Mouser, why not just use 945's anyway? They stock KSC945's.

Thanks!  I picked up the KSC945's, for some reason I wasn't thinking of the modern version of the 2SC945's.  I have everything together, but I am not getting any sound.  I went through the troubleshooting guide, but was wondering if there are any specific voltage values or wave forms I can scope for at certain points in the board to figure out my issue?

Check you're getting 9v and 6v at the regulator outputs.

I had them both in the wrong way round on mine. DOH!

Hi to everyone from Rome Italy! This is my first post. I have read this post and I've purchased the transistors KSC945YTA from Mouser. I've finished to assembling the cb55, but does not produce any sound. I checked the pinouts of 2sc945 and is ECB, while the ksc945 is EBC. Now i'll remove all transistors i'll try to bend the legs, if long enough and see what happens...

Same problem here as bmaximus. I bought what were supposed to be 2SC945s, they are printed C945 but were actually KSC945s. After bending the 2nd and 3rd leg they work fine.
