Picked up a Speak and Read recently.  The owner told me she used it as a child, but hasn't touched it in years.
Took it home, plugged it in and it turns on and immediately turns off again.  You'll begin to hear the start up sound and if you hold down the On button it will say "word zap" and then shut off.
The power supply is alright, it worked with the other Speak and Spell she sold me.
Noticed some threads here mention the issue is usually at the keyboard connector or the power supply.  I poked around the keyboard connector and to my surprise (just because it was that easy), it seems to be working fine now!
I'm pretty excited as these are my first Speaks.

This is just one of many recent examples of how useful this place has been to me in my short time here.

Thanks to everyone here that shares and continues to make this place a great community.

we aim to please  ;)  :D

Sometimes replacing the screen can bring it back to life, but thats some fairly major surgery. I'd check out the power supply board first. If you can't tell whats wrong just identify the parts and replace them one by one. Its a crude technique but it'll work sooner or later.
i am not paid to listen to this drivel, you are a terminal fool

I was really bummed about mine not working as well.  Be persistent!  It can pay off.  Mine seems to want to screw up again after letting it sit for a day, so I'm thinking an extra momentary switch between points on the keypad connector might be needed.  Now I just need to find out which pins get it started...
Hold down the On button while poking around between the pins from the connector, that's how mine started working.
