Sequencers used for triggering toys

So here goes my first post....

Does anybody have any knowledge they would like to share on using a sequencer to trigger circuit bent toys? I have read a few articles but still not understanding some of the concepts involving rca jacks wired to matrix button, and applying voltage to achieve a trigger or "push state" on the trigger. Any help would be appreciated. I have some basic electronics knowledge and have had a bit of luck building APCs, light theremins and LED sequencers. I am ready to tackle a sequencer using this schematic:

and would really like to use it to trigger some toys that I have bent up.

Hi, ive also been casually working on designs for a sequencer for quite a while (too long!).
Heres one by the reputable dude casper electronics:

I want one to trigger where the piezos normally would on my electric drum and so a volage pulse out is fine for me.
I was after more steps than the one above steps so ive tried (unsuccessfully) to cascade two 4017's. A new thought occoured to me... maybe they could be driven by the two outputs of a darlington pair (flip flop).

This would'nt allow the 50% duty cycling thing done with the 555 (which might be a problem) but would be a nice tidy circuit!  Perhaps though the square outputs could be turned into a spike, thus distinguising individual steps, using a capitor (a bit like in this post: http://www.getlofi.com/?p=1978).  A

Any thoughts?...  Also I dont know much about the 4016 in caspers diagram, is it working like a bank of relays in the circuit? Cheers!!

A darlington pair is not a flip-flop.

I got the sequencer circuit that I had linked to in my first post breadboarded and working for the most part and was going to try and use a vactrols to trigger the toys. The weird thing however is I don't get any sound from the sequencer unless I touch the circuit with my finger at any point between the negative side of the diodes or the resistor at pin 7 of the first IC in APC. I have tried a few things but can't figure out what is going on. The only chnages I made to the circuit is I used 82k ohm resistors rather than 80K, I made it four steps rather than eight and I bypassed the DPDT switch. Any thoughts?..anyone?

Figured out my sequencer issue and got it working with four steps! I just need to pick up a few more resistors and switches and I will be ready to put it on a circuit board and into the case I am putting together for it. Still thinking about how to get a vacrtol to figure into all this as a trigger
