found one for feck all in a charity shop today and bought it as it was cheap and thought ot'd make an interesting controller for  a drum machine or something, but I've no idea how best to hack it to do this. anyone got anytips on using gear like this as a controller?

you mean a joystick ? this is what i am doing ; i measure witch function goes to witch pin, write it down.
then solder the same pin on the connector to the right points of a circuitboard, et voila :
a quick and easy, cheap, no space problem- way to control an instrument or a toy !
most work could be that you have to change a pot inside the joystic for a usable value.
but i swear by it !

here's a handy link by the way : http://pinouts.ru/connector/15_pin_D-SUB_male_connector.shtml

It's not a joystick, more like a ps2 controller but without he analouge sticks, I'm guessing the pins are pretty standard though.

Ta for the link as well.
