The Newbie and His First Bend

Hey guys, So im having a few issues with my first Project. (I also dont own a digital camera so ill try to be descriptive as possible! >.<)

Basically i found this old and obscure child's toy drum machine (a few drum loops and a couple of songs as well)

Everything was going superb and i was just about to put it into a project box until i got cocky and decided to simplify the way the circuit is powered. And for the most part i think i did a fantastic job until i came down to the speaker....

The speaker had 2 volume levels connected to the ON/OFF switch. when i tried to hook up the speaker in the original way it had been before i took apart the circuit, it didnt work.
So i fiddled around and found that if i soldered it to these 2 connections i could get it to work, although it is barely audible. it sort of sounds like i've hooked it into a spot where it has too much resistance against it.

Also i can get a few loud crackles when i play around looking for other ways to connect it. And the speaker is and was in perfect working condition.

So what im asking is if anyone has any ideas on how to find a way to hook up the speaker properly?

Find the audio amplifier, and trace back the output to wherever the speaker is supposed to connect on.  If you can post links to a couple of high-resolution pictures of the board I can probably give you a clue where to start looking.

Theres not a lot that can go wrong in there. If you've got it wired up exactly the way it was when you started then I'm guessing the problem is with that transistor. What does it say on it?

Please bare with me, im very inexperienced in circuitry but the if the transistor is the black thingy hanging off the side then it says:

The real problem is i have no idea where to connect the speaker. what i do is play around the board trying to connect it to different points but i can get some static clipping noises and occasionally i can even hear the drum beats but theyre extremely quiet!

back in the original case of the toy it had the black wire of the speaker connected to the battery and the red wire was connected someplace else (i forgot where )

Any ideas?

using the first pic as reference:
do the faint sounds come from pin #2 (starting on the left) from the extra vertical board that has the black blob?
so the second one near the alligator clip?

anyway
on the transistor (the black dangling thingy):

the top leg has the battery wire connected to it
the middle leg has the volume control wire connected to it
so my guess would be the bottom leg would be where you want to have your speaker + connected.

that means, on the far left of the board, the lowest point that has solder.
the point to the left of where the black wire goes, the one that has the 'these 3 black wires...' label.
from what i can tell from your pictures, that is, anyway.

if that doesn't work, you may have fried the tranny..


does your power switch work, by the way? it seems to be wired rather funnily.
