hing hon ek-001 / broken

hey folks, got one of these in today, turned it on & several keys weren't working. got sound from some keys. feww minutes later it turned crazy & makes hissing / screaming kinds of sounds now like radio frequency or something... anybody know is this is likely tobe fixable?

Depends on the type you have, but the keys and buttons should be quite easy to fix - I fixed some buttons on mine at the weekend, like a lot of Hing Hons this one had a terrible soldering job! You can usually trace the keys back to the points going into the chip, the kind of 'floating' solder joints between two of the boards can be a bit shabby. On this one there was also a scratch on the rhythm selector button area of the board, so I found two connections and bridged that with a bit of wire.

Don't know about the hissing radio frequency though :/
Have you opened it up to see if any connections are looking dodgy?

The radio frequencies weirdness could easily be down to shoddy soldering if something isn't grounded properly. Resolder everything that looks even remotely dodgy, and then reflow the joints on everything else

Anyone would think the Chinese slave children that put this stuff together aren't getting paid enough. $:-\$

here is a thought...instead of doing away with the crazy noise, why not regognize it, harness it and manipulate it?!

i have a question: why do you consider "weird radio frequency hiss" a BAD thing? perhaps harnas this and use it to your advantage? ;-)

Is there an 8 week conceptual echo in here?

If it's getting in the way of normal operation, then I'd consider it a bad thing! I want all my devices to be usable at their factory settings when you set all the controls to default.

Sure, if you find a connection that makes a "weird radio frequency hiss" and attach a knob to it, that can be good, but if you can't find a way to turn it off, that's problematic.
